A SHORT STORY

This story is 1,798 words long. Most of it is written in the past tense and in the first person. It’s a true story, but the direct speech is approximate. I’ve read too many books where the writer claims to remember every word from a conversation which took place seventy years before.

There are two main characters in the story. Firstly, there is myself, the unreliable narrator. And then there is James Gibbon. On a character questionnaire he would be described as

1. Scottish.

2. Forty-two years old.

3. Atheist.

4. English lecturer at the University of Newcastle.

5. Stout, with greying brown hair and a slight squint (which he claimed was from eight years of working in a bank, always suspecting counterfeit notes).

6. Unmarried.

7. Wry, melancholy, intelligent.
